Juniperus phoenicea or 'φίδα' as it is called in Tenos by the locals, at least those who still remember it growing on the slopes of the island, is the only local wood that is naturally insect-resistant and very hard! It was broadly used in house construction for it’s natural resistance to insect infection as well as its toughness but also used as fuel by the ironsmiths of the island. It is now almost extinct.

A very old wooden lock found in Loutra summer rental house in Tenos islands. It was used on a barn and is now fully functional following its restoration a few summers ago. A couple of visits to the folklore museum of Loutra to study similar locks helped a lot to understand it’s simple but effective mechanism. Vernacular ingenuity!! All and all the parts of the woodenlock are five: the main body, two moving parts within the lock, the part that locks (the latch) and the key. All parts were made from mulberry wood which is very tough and resistant to insects.
